Long-stalked sedge (Carex pedunculata) is a small woodland sedge. It forms a dense group of basal leaves approximately 15 cm across, making it a good option to fill out a garden matrix. It flowers in April, earlier than many sedges. The seeds are covered with a dark red-brown scale, similar in colour to the base of the plant. The seeds have large, nutrient dense elaiosomes, intended to be carried away by ants for seed dispersal. The ants take the fruit back to their nest to eat the elaiosome, and discard the seed, allowing it to germinate undisturbed underground.
